Beginning the Peru-suit of Literacy

During our time in Lima, we had the opportunity to visit several public schools and speak with educators, students, and ministry officials. I learned that Peru places a strong emphasis on foundational literacy, with national policies designed to ensure early reading success for all students. While schools face challenges such as overcrowded classrooms and limited resources, there is a deep commitment among teachers and leaders to improve outcomes. Community involvement, teacher dedication, and structured national assessments all contribute to Peru’s high literacy rates, but the greatest difference I have seen so far lies in student motivation. The students are motivated to break the cycle of poverty to create a better future for themselves and their family.
